Edji is a versatile tool for shaping lesson plans and helping students learn, and because we do our best to impose very few restrictions on how Edji is used, Teachers are free to integrate Edji into their classrooms wherever it can be helpful for their students. One way that we have seen Edji being used is to enhance the AVID’s foundational strategy: WICOR.

What is WICOR?

WICOR is an anagram for Writing to Learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading to learn. These are 5 research-proven techniques for helping students succeed by organizing how students learn. The goal of WICOR is to get students to work actively with new information, instead of expecting them to passively learn. WICOR helps students think, talk, write, read and ask questions in order to absorb new information.

Writing to Learn

The AVID philosophy believes that if you can’t write about a topic, you don’t know it well enough. Edji believes that one of the first steps to understanding is putting your thoughts down as a comment.  Writing helps you organize your thoughts and verbalize your opinions, and helps you really get a grasp of the subject you are learning about.

How Edji Helps:

Edji’s text comments are the perfect place for your students to write down their thoughts and show their understanding of the topic at hand.  With Edji, your students can link their written thoughts with the parts of the text that inspired them. As an educator, this gives you a unique opportunity to visualize your students thinking. What got them interested? What were they saying about it? Edji lets any thought,  opinion or question be expressed right when it originated.


AVID defines Inquiry as “the question” that moves the learner to action. Students really only uncover their understanding by asking questions, because questions let learners analyze and synthesize information to clarify their own thinking. AVID advocates for creating a safe environment where learners feel comfortable wondering, questioning, and hypothesizing.

How Edji Helps:

Edji comments give your students that space to feel comfortable asking questions. By leaving instructions for your students to think critically and ask questions, students can leave comments with their questions for you to see. Some questions might be rhetorical or questions that you want them to ponder as they read, while others you might be able to help them out by leaving them a reply with an answer, or a push in the right direction.


Collaboration is all about developing positive independence, working toward a common goal with others, and utilizing our social sides to increase motivation. In a classroom, you can introduce collaboration through group assignments or moving the tables in your classroom into groups so students can work together to complete tasks.

How Edji Helps:

Collaboration is the name of the game in Edji. We’ve seen that teachers love having their students read and then turning on the Heat Vision for them. Stacking Highlightsallows students to see where students were commenting on the text. Did they see what was important? What did their classmates comment on that they missed? Most importantly, what did their classmates say? Make sure you give students time to explore the text with heat vision on. If you’re a Hero, encourage them to read through the comments their classmates left and leave replies instigating discussion and answering questions. Edji is built to help students help each other, make sure you leave time for them to collaborate!


One of AVID’s cornerstones is the classroom binder that all students keep. When students learn to stay organized, they get to see how their brain works, how to organize information to maximize their ability to learn, and how specific strategies help them monitor their learning outcomes.

How Edji Helps:

AVID’s organization strategies are more about how classrooms and assignments are organized, which unfortunately isn’t where Edji specializes. We can’t do it all! Make sure that your Edji lessons fit into the organization that you’ve set forth for your class.

Reading to Learn

Critical and close reading is instrumental for a student advancing their knowledge. AVID pushes teachers to ensure that their students are reading for meaning, not just for information. Students should be reading to gain meaning, understanding, and knowledge from text.

How Edji Helps:

Obviously, using Edji starts with reading. We’ve always felt that focusing on helping students read was very important because once a student hits third grade they are asked by today’s school system to “Read to Learn”,  instead of “learning to read.” When assigning an Edji Reading, make sure you let your students know the goals of the assignment, and what the big picture is for the reading. Make sure they know that they aren’t jsut supposed to remember the details of the reading, but also try to understand why the reading is important.
